Doorn River Waterfall

This waterfall is situated a few miles north of Nieuwoudtville on the road to Loeriesfontein. It is within easy walking distance of the entrance, just off the Loeriesfontein road. There are a number of interesting paths that allow the viewing of the entire waterfall system and the surrounding plants and flowers.

Doorn River Waterfall

The photo above shows just the upper part of the waterfall. There is a second portion where the river plunges through an opening in the rock down a precipice of approximately 90 metres, and is most spectacular during the rainy season. A picture of this portion of the waterfall can be seen in the "Album", on the page about Nieuwoudtville. The Doorn river is an interesting example of river catchment and flow. Since the splitting of Gondwanaland some 195 million years ago, certain rivers flow inland from an escarpment;  the Doorn River is one of those rivers. The area surrounding the waterfall is home to a wide variety of plant and bird species.

Babiana  Evening Primrose  Moraea  Oxalis

Along the side of the road not far from Niewoudtville, grew this Babiana crispa. The yellow Evening Primrose grew so close to the road it abutted the tar. Further into the field behind it, were a number of blue Moraea ciliata. The yellow flowers that appear to be Oxalis, were seen at the Waterfall itself.
