Nieuwoudtville Area

These pictures were taken just south of Nieuwoudtville in an area near the renowned Glen Lyon Estate. There were a large variety of plants in just one small area close to the road.  Further down, another area tucked between fence and road had completely different flowers, some of which are shown further down the page.


Nieuwoudtville Collage

Not far from Nieuwoudtville, the Glen Lyon farm offers tours through its wildflowers. On this farm, sheep farming has been succesfully managed with selective grazing to allow the conservation of wildflowers.The farm is renowned for its impressive spring flower displays of numerous species and is a showcase for botanists from all over the world. Wildflower tours are given by the owner to visitors who are allowed to roam through the fields of flowers.

The Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve is about 8 miles south of Nieuwoudtville. Here, glacier tracks made during the Dwyka Ice Age can be seen. There are also a number of hiking trails and Bushman paintings in the Reserve.

Despite missing the above sightseeing trips, the flower display on just a relatively quick drive south of Nieuwoudtville yielded some wonderful photo opportunities.

Romulae  Bulbinella  Pink Flowers

All three of these flowers are bulbs. The red Romulea is named after Romulus since the other known concentration is near Rome. The yellow Bulbinella is common in both yellow and orange forms in the area.
