Bitterfontein

This page is called Bitterfontein because the town lies at the middle of a stretch of the N7 travelled on one day between Vanrhynsdorp and Kamieskroon. The pictures were taken somewhere along that highway. Much of the road passed through the Knersvlakte, yet many flowers were seen at the side of the road.

Yellow Grielum carpet

Bitterfontein, 240 miles from Cape Town, is one of just a few towns in a long stretch of dry land. In this area, yellow-flowered sheep-bush and others cover the landscape, while smaller plants include multi-colored Gazanias and many Mesembryanthemums. At the Kersbos Flower Park, five miles outside of Bitterfontein, a farmer has preserved a large area of plants and flowers where tourists are able to use pathways to view the flowers.

Bitterfontein was named for the bitter water fountain around which the town was established. It is the business town of the area, and not far from Bitterfontein is the tiny village of Nuwerus. Where Bitterfontein has the hotel of the area, Nuwerus has the church. The Bitterfontein railway station is at the end of the line from Cape Town.

  Yellow Grielum   Red Anomalesia

Since reaching Kamieskroon was the more important task of the day, very few pictures were taken on this road. However just off the side of the road in isolation, the red Anomalesia saccatawas spotted. The great stretches of yellow flowers were made up of a variety of the Grielum genus.
